For all of us, the opportunity to live close to the sea makes Marbella, like the entire Spanish Costa del Sol, incredibly attractive. In a distant northern country with diverse yet challenging climates, the mere anticipation of a beach holiday brings us endless joy. This is one of the main reasons for looking for a new home here.
So, which beaches in Marbella and the surrounding area are considered the best?
First of all, it's worth noting that almost all beaches in our area offer the necessary amenities for a pleasant stay, such as sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, restrooms and showers, and bars and beachside restaurants (Chiringuitos). These restaurants, in fact, provide the aforementioned services.
According to Spanish law, the coastline itself, the beach strip, belongs to the Spanish Crown, so there are simply no private beaches completely off-limits to outsiders. Even guests at five-star hotels relax alongside other tourists, the only difference being discounts on beach services, which are not offered to outside clients.
Of course, beaches can be more or less expensive, or cheaper, depending on a variety of factors. At the same time, all of us, foreigners and Spaniards alike, have the right and full opportunity to arrive at any beach with our own umbrella, towels, fold-out sun loungers, and, if desired, food and drinks in a cooler bag, and settle down right on the sand wherever we like, without paying anything or anyone. Incidentally, this is precisely what most Spaniards do: some arrive with their entire families (and they are large here!) at their favorite beach, settle in with complete comfort and envy-worthy style, and spend the entire day by the sea.
Marbella and its surrounding area offer a wide variety of beaches, as the coastline is uninterrupted, making it difficult to pinpoint where one beach ends and another begins. For example, within the city limits, in the Puerto Banús and Golden Mile areas, there are several popular beaches: Puerto Banús itself, Nueva Andalucia, Nagueles, Venus, El Cable... these are lively and crowded coastal spots, especially during high season. However, if you drive just a short distance towards Málaga, 8 to 16 km from the center of Marbella, you'll find some truly wonderful beaches, renowned for their convenient entry into the sea and well-established service. These beaches include Los Monteros, Bahía de Marbella, El Rosario, Alicate Playa, Elviria, Las Chapas, and Cabopino. High-class hotels, expensive residential complexes, fine restaurants, and impressive private villas are all nearby, making the shores predominantly frequented by a respectable and well-mannered crowd. The sand here is clean, light, and there are no rocks at the entrance to the water. The surrounding pine trees lend a special freshness and aroma to the air.
Marbella's city limits also boast some very attractive beaches, as we've listed above. Nearby, there are also numerous shops and special entertainment for children. Employees of nearby offices and banks can walk to the sea during their breaks, swim, grab a bite to eat, and relax, which is very pleasant and convenient in the summer.
In prestigious Puerto Banús, you can sunbathe overlooking magnificent yachts, close to boutiques of world-famous brands, surrounded by a wide selection of restaurants and bars to suit every taste, and the enormous El Corte Inglés department store located right next door offers excellent shopping. Incidentally, this wonderful department store is open for lunch and is open until 10:00 PM.
You can sunbathe and swim on Marbella's beaches from late April to late October, as long as you don't mind the refreshingly cool water in spring and fall. There are plenty of off-season swimmers, too! Warm, sunny weather prevails almost year-round, and you can always see swimmers in November and February. The sea temperature at this time is around 16-18 degrees Celsius, so these swimmers are certainly not "walruses." Among them are Brits, Scandinavians, Russians, and even Spaniards.
There are beaches that have only just officially opened to dogs—Playa del Pinillo in Marbella and Ventura Del Mar in San Pedro—but even in summer, you can safely stroll along the sand with your pet until 9:00 AM and after 9:00 PM. Owners are expected to be responsible and clean up after their pets both on the beach and in the street. You'll find trash bins everywhere, and most tourists try to keep the beach clean and avoid leaving traces of their picnics on the shore.
