Fuengirola was first mentioned in the 1st century BC by the Roman historian Pomponius Mela; later, Pliny the Elder wrote of it as a fortified city.
The Arab fortress of Sohail, built in the 10th century during the reign of King Abd ar-Rahman III, has a rich history.
