San Pedro del Alcántara dates back to 1860, when it was founded by General Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha, Marquis of Duero. San Pedro is located on a nearly five-kilometer stretch of coastline, home to the municipal beaches of Cortijo Blanco, San Pedro Playa, and Guadalmina. The resort consists of four districts: the historic center, Nueva Alcántara, Guadalmina Alta, and Guadalmina Baja. The main square of the old town is home to the 19th-century Parish Church and the Villa de San Luis, built in colonial style as the residence of the colony's administrator. It now houses the city administration. Nueva Alcántara includes a promenade, a famous tennis club, the Laude International School, and residential complexes. Guadalmina Alta is located around golf courses and is lined with private villas and apartments of various classes. Guadalmina Baja overlooks the beach and is a well-known and expensive area with villas and residences, as well as the Calpe International School.
Two years ago, the San Pedro del Alcántara Boulevard and its 54,000 square meter green park opened. The massive construction project took several years, employing top architects. The result was a multifunctional recreational area connecting the city with the waterfront. It features sports and children's playgrounds, a 1,250 s
quare meter roller rink, running and cycling paths, shops and boutiques, cafes and bars, and an 800-seat amphitheater for various events. The town is also famous for its antiquities – the ruins of Roman thermal baths and the early Christian basilica of Vega del Mar, which contains a necropolis with two hundred burials, and the 16th-century Bovedas lookout tower.
